A "WONDERFUL atmosphere" was enjoyed by pupils at Devoran school when leading artist Kurt Jackson donated artwork to their gallery.

Kurt s poke to the children on Monday about the experience of painting two pieces of artwork, one of which will remain at the school for the pupils to enjoy.

The other will be taken on a tour of schools as part of the county council's Schools Works of Art Collection.

"The children were rapt," said head teacher Carol Breakwell. "They had been busy producing artwork ready for Kurt's visit."

Kurt, renowned for his love of Cornish landscapes, told the children how he sat with his legs dangling over a quarry when he was painting one of the pieces.

He also recounted how he rushed to finish the other painting while sitting on a rock because the tide was coming in.

"It was wonderful atmosphere and you could see in their faces how this brought the experience of painting to life for them," said Mrs Breakwell.

"Kurt was great with the children and on a tour of. the school he entertained them by writing messages like 'Kurt was here' on classroom blackboards. He joked with children about how he decided to wear his best pair of boots to the presentation which were still flecked with paint.

"The children are really inspired to get going on their next art project on winter landscapes now."

The ceremony at the school was attended by Terry Lello, the county council's lead member for Children, Young People and Families as well county council chairman Doris Ansari and Louise Jones, director of Lemon Street Gallery, who coordinated the day.

The art collection was established in 1961.
